WAYNESBURG -- It's a brown building that sits behind their home on Mottice Drive. It's a place out in the country, a little more than a mile after turning off Route 43 and up a gravel driveway.
It's here where Kelly Knepper and her family operate Knepper's Cake Cottage. It's a business which specializes in cakes for weddings and other special events.
"This has always been kind of a dream to do something like this because I like to see people happy," Knepper said. "I like to make people happy, and I've always been fascinated with the bells and whistles of a wedding and the joy of it."
The venture came about after Knepper was forced to leave the regular workforce due to a back injury.
"When the opportunity was there, I said you know I'm going to do it," Knepper said. I went to the Wilt school. I already had a food safety license in the state so it was just a matter of going through the legalities of doing a business."
The Dover High School graduate and California native explained she had already been making cakes for a long time, "but nothing to this degree." She said many moons ago, she made her first cake in girl scouts.
"It was such a mess, it slid off the plate," she said.
Knepper's sister told her she thought it would be a neat idea to have a little shed to make the cakes out of. The family had noticed the structures at Crossroads plaza, and they constructed their cottage out of that concept.
The business opened in July of 2015. The family worked out of their home the first 10 months while the cottage was finished. The first order went out in May.
"This was much more convenient for me," Knepper said. "If I need to sit, I can sit. I can go in the house and rest. I can schedule just enough to keep me busy."
Knepper said she doesn't take more than she can handle. For a big order, she will seek the help of her sister and sister-in-law. She added she isn't looking to make the business into a giant bakery, but she still enjoys the work.
In addition to wedding cakes, Knepper does character, wedding anniversary, baby shower, molded figurines, fondant and sugar laced cakes among others. She also does decorated cookies, cupcakes and edible printing.
Knepper has done some structural cakes including replicas of a semi and an airplane. She will run her creative ideas past her husband, Gary, who she calls a creative genius.
Baking and crumb coating is typically done on the same day. Cakes are then chilled before putting the main frosting on the next day and decorating them the day after that.
Orders for Knepper's cakes are taken by appointment. She said she would welcome visitors to the cottage as long as they call beforehand.
