When it comes to keeping carpets clean, the muddy months of spring can certainly put a homeowner's care and maintenance skills to the test.

In a household with pets and children, stains may be a year-round battle. In anticipation of the messy months ahead, Hosner Carpet One Floor & Home compiled cleaning tips and techniques for some of carpet's toughest stains. In addition to the advice provided, the flooring retailer also offers a free Stain First Aid app and an exclusive Video Series to help their customers tackle over 50 of the most common household stains.

Mud

Tracking mud into the home and onto the carpets during the spring is all too common. To tackle a muddy mishap, begin by scraping or blotting any excess mud. Next, apply detergent solution using a damp towel and leave for 3-5 minutes. Blot and apply white vinegar (undiluted), using a damp towel. Apply water with a damp sponge. Blot again. Finish by weighing down a half-inch thick pad of white paper towels to absorb all the moisture. Leave overnight if necessary.

Chewing Gum

No stain appears more permanent than sticky chewing gum that has become one with carpet fibers. But alas it's not permanent, and the removal process is even quite simple. Remove as much gum from the carpet as you can by scraping or blotting. Freeze remaining gum with ice cubes. Shatter frozen gum with a blunt object like the back of a large spoon. Vacuum chips away before they melt.

Red Wine

Fear of spilled wine can leave house guests feeling confined. Allow visitors to mingle freely, and in the case of an accidently spill, follow this simple step-by-step process. Blot up the excess spill as quickly as possible. Apply the detergent solution using a damp towel and leave 3-5 minutes. Blot and apply white vinegar (undiluted), using a damp towel. Blot again. Finish by weighing down a half-inch thick pad of white paper towels to absorb all the moisture. Leave overnight if necessary.

Candle Wax

A candlelit room creates a beautiful and unmatched ambiance. If wax finds its way to the carpet, first scrape off excess. Then, cover the stain with brown paper and apply a warm iron until remaining wax is absorbed. Be sure the paper is large enough to cover the stained area. Take care never to touch the iron to the carpet as the fiber might melt. Change paper or rotate to clean area and repeat until all material is absorbed.

Alternatively, try scraping the spill and then freezing it with ice cubes. Shatter the frozen wax with a blunt object like the back of a large spoon. Vacuum chips away before they melt.

Lip Stick

If lipstick finds its way to the floor, start by scraping or blotting up the excess spill. Apply the detergent solution using a damp towel and leave 3-5 minutes. Blot and apply white vinegar (undiluted), using a damp towel. Apply water with damp sponge. Blot again and finish by weighing down a half-inch thick pad of white paper towels to absorb all the moisture. Leave overnight if necessary.

Stain Techniques

& Preparation

Preparing in advance to tackle carpet stains will help avoid adding more stress to today's busy lifestyle. First, it pays to learn a few basic stain-tackling techniques.

Apply: Wet a clean, white towel or (non-printed) paper towel with a cleaning solution. Then dampen the carpet with it. Avoid wetting the carpet through to its backing.

Blot: Absorb the excess liquid from the carpet by pressing straight down with a clean, dry, white towel. Do not rub. Place a half-inch thick pad of clean, dry, white paper towels with a weight on top and leave overnight if necessary.

Scrape: Gently scratch the soiled area with the blunt edge of a spoon. Scrape from the outside edge of the spot toward the center.

Second, it helps to have stain-fighting supplies on hand and together: clear dish washing detergent, white vinegar, white towels, white paper towels, large metal spoon and sponge

With these tools and techniques ready, life's spills and mishaps will be easy to handle. Learn more at CarpetOne.com/stains.
