Due to popular demand, Historic Zoar Village and Fort Laurens have added an adult version of History Camp to their July schedule. The camp is jointly sponsored by both sites and is scheduled from 1-4 p.m. daily, July 18-21. Adults campers explore life on the Ohio frontier through hands-on activities, demonstrations and storytelling from costumed historical interpreters.
"The adult History Camp idea originated after we took several calls asking if adults could sign up for our kids' History Camp, and if adults could do the activities with their children or grandchildren," says Tammi Mackey-Shrum, site director. "The more we thought about it, the more appeal the idea had. Who doesn't love to keep learning, and why should kids have all the fun? Adult History Camp is perfect for those who love to learn and are always up for an adventure."
Each day has a different theme:
Tuesday, July 18: Tour Zoar (1817 present) includes a guided tour of the village by a costumed historical interpreter. The tour includes all museum buildings open to the public and stories about how the village operated as a communal settlement.
Wednesday, July 19: Life in Zoar (1817-1898) features demonstrations and activities including baking, butter churning, soap carving, tinsmithing and gardening. Participants learn about the Society of Separatists that founded Zoar and learn about village life during the 1850s.
Thursday, July 20: Life on the Ohio and Erie Canal (1820s to 1913) includes a walk along the Ohio and Erie Canalway Towpath Trail and a discussion about how the Society of Separatists helped build the canal, and how it provided the local area with greater access to national trade.
Friday, July 21: Life at Fort Laurens (1778-1779) includes an interactive Revolutionary War encampment where campers can dress up as soldiers and perform daily chores. Participants will learn about why the Fort was built and what events led to its eventual abandonment.
The cost is $25 per adult per day, or $85 for all four days, and includes an afternoon snack. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 330-874-3011 or 800-262-6195.
Camp days on July 18, 19 and 20 begin at 198 Main St., Zoar. The July 21 camp is located at 11067 Fort Laurens Road N.W., Bolivar.
