After guiding his team to its first state title in program history this past June, East Canton High School track and field head coach Tom Loy received recognition from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
USTFCCCA announced Loy as the Ohio High School Boys Track and Field Coach of the Year on Wednesday.
The organization selected state-by-state boys and girls winners of its fourth annual high school coach of the year award for track and field.
The award is based on a number of criteria: Their teams' finishes at their respective state championships, the number of different events in which athletes were qualified, individual championships and how their teams' performances stack up to previous years, among other criteria.
The Hornets won the Division III state championship in June, making them just the fourth Stark County boys track and field program to win a team title. East Canton qualified 12 athletes to state in 10 events, scoring 49 points to win the meet by 12 points. Loy, the longtime boys and girls coach at East Canton, guided the boys to league, district and regional titles in the weeks leading up to the state meet.
Loy is now a candidate for the USTFCCCA National Coach of the Year.
