St. James School students in Waynesburg held a refugee awareness prayer service on Jan. 31 during Catholic Schools Week.
Students traveled to six different stations in the church making their pilgrimage and learning about struggles that refugees face. Children collected milk jugs filled with loose change to help refugees from 10 middle eastern and African countries.
The money will be sent to Catholic Relief Services to aid the refugees. The total amount of money collected is still being counted.
School officials explained Pope Francis has asked those to experience God's mercy by welcoming the outcast. Finding ways to help refugees in building better lives was one way to do just that.
