The East Canton track and field team had 11 members take part at the 2017 OATCCC Indoor State Championships this past Saturday at the University of Akron.
This was a record number for the Hornets as 10 boys and one girls earned their entry to compete amongst the best 18 athletes and relays in Division II-III.
The 4x200 consisting of Mitch Mitchell, Cody Vacco, Wyatt Deutschman and Nathaniel Sundheimer set a new school record with a time of 1:34.73 to place 15th.
Zach McClaskey exploded from the blocks and hurdled well to produce the sixth best mark of the semifinals of the 60 hurdle as his time of 8.64 qualified him to the finals. In the finals, McClaskey hit the second of the five hurdles pretty hard and fell back to eigth place. He earned the first medal of the meet for the Hornets and became only the second Hornet to earn an indoor medal in the event.
The 4x800 consisting of Demetrious Snellenberger, Kyeem Newell-Owens, Tony Cappillo and Cody Vacco finished 17th with a time of 9:03.76.
Josh Conrad earned East Canton's first indoor medal in the high jump, clearing 6-foot-2 to capture fifth place. Conrad returned to the track to compete in the 800 and was able to place ninth in 2:00.17.
Mitch Mitchell showed great consistency with four jumps over 39 feet, with a best of 39'8.5 to earn seventh in the triple jump. This also established a new school record.
The 4x400 foursome of McClaskey, Newell-Owens, Josh Conrad and James McCullough finished with a time of 3:32.00, just missing the school record as they finished eighth.
For the girls, Ashlynn Almasy qualified to the state meet, but was unable to race due to a slight injury.
