Osnaburg board approves stadium/track upgrades

Published: March 10, 2017 10:00 AM

The Osnaburg Local Board of Education has decided to invest more than $1 million dollars into its present and future athletes.

The football stadium is 19 years old, which has resulted in the deterioration of the rubberized track. In several areas, cracks have formed and the base asphalt is showing through. It was determined the track needed to be replaced.

Upon further investigation, the football field and track would need to be uniformly graded, which would solve any drainage issues.

It was decided to make these improvements immediately -- grading the field and track, installing a turf field, and replacing the track.

The contract for the work has been awarded to Maumee Bay Turf Center at a cost of $1,134,500. There is an option to upgrade the turf to 2.5-inch pile for an additional cost of $24,675.

The stadium improvements have resulted in the cancellation of all home track and field events for the 2017 season. Head Coach Tom Loy is currently working with surrounding schools to secure training times at their sites. Canton South has graciously offered to host the annual East Canton Invite on April 8.

The plan is for the field to be installed and ready for the 2017 football season.
