Sandy Valley alum leading Stony Brook men's basketball to success

A Sandy Valley High School graduate has the Stony Brook men's basketball team near the top of the American East Conference. Jeff Boals, a 1990 Cardinal alum, has led the Seawolves to a 15-10 overall record and a 10-2 mark in conference play as of Feb. 13.

Sandy Valley girls notch 10th win of season

The Lady Cardinals beat Massillon 2,006-1,881 for their 10th win of the season. Sandy Valley led by just 45 pins after the opening two games, and put the match away by winning all four baker games - 139-122, 145-118, 166-135, 144-139.

Tom Loy receives career award

The Ohio Association of Track & Cross Country Coaches held its Hall of Fame Banquet on Jan. 27 at the Hilton Hotel in Easton. East Canton Coach Tom Loy received the 2016 Fred Dafler Career State Coach of the Year Award. Loy has been coaching East Canton girls track since 1991.

Seniors go out with a win

Makayla Loveless and Alana Hill each had 12 points in leading Sandy Valley to a 58-35 win over Strasburg on senior night. The Lady Cardinals led 14-7 at the end of one, 30-13 at halftime, and 40-27 heading into the fourth quarter.

Mitch Mitchell poured 14 points and Anthony Baad and Trey Mallonn each scored in double figures during East Canton's 67-58 league loss to visiting Malvern. Malvern jumped out to a 17-7 first-quarter advantage and led at halftime 31-20.

East Canton closed out its league schedule with a 53-33 win over Strasburg. The Wizards jumped out to a 19-10 first-quarter advantage and never trailed the rest of the way. The winners led 31-15 at halftime, and 46-25 entering the fourth quarter.

East Canton bowlers to compete at sectionals this Saturday

The East Canton boys bowling team was beaten by Lake 2,345-2,175. Codey Reed had 193-162 for a 355, Colton Snyder had 199-139 for a 338, Dakota Snyder had 177-150 for a 327, Nick Krajcovic had 179-129 for a 308, and Justin Nichols had 121-139 for a 260. The Hornets lost to Perry 2.

Trailing after the opening eight minutes of play, Sandy Valley rallied for a hard-fought 52-46 win over host East Canton. The Hornets led 15-12 after the first quarter, but the Cardinals regrouped to take a 33-25 advantage into halftime.

Sandy Valley host a triangular last week, picking up wins against Newcomerstown and Malvern. The Cardinals beat the Trojans 36-15, and downed the Hornets 42-6.

A balanced scoring attack and staunch defense propelled East Canton to a 69-36 win over host Newcomerstown. The Hornets dominated play from start to finish - leading 15-6 at the end of the first quarter, 34-19 at halftime, and 54-29 heading into the final frame.

Lexi Webster had games of 174-148 for a 322 in leading East Canton past Central Catholic 1,869-1,667. The Lady Hornets led by 172 pins after the opening two games, and split the baker games 159-144, 130-141, 110-127, 155-112.

Sandy Valley fought back from a double-digit deficit and had a shot to win the game in the closing seconds of a 59-57 setback to host Garaway. Dan Bartholomew had a big game for the Cardinals with 23 points, six rebounds and three steals.

A new northern cardinal vehicle license plate is available for purchase from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The new image was created in celebration of the plate's 20th anniversary.
